UPDATE!

The ECOBLOG has been restored! The links to videos which were previously formatted with Splashcast have been revised to once again lead to the intended videos. Links to videos which are no longer found on the internet have been removed. I have already added many new video links to the Scripps section and a couple to the Mind & Body section. Next I will again start updating the In The News section from time to time. Come back as I will also be adding more video finds to the various sections. Coming soon a Weather section.

SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY

Scripps oceanographic research vessels and research platform FLIP make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world. The institution's newest research vessel, the 274-foot R/V Roger Revelle, is named for the former director of Scripps and founder of the University of California, San Diego. Scripps ships have state-of-the-art research instruments to study marine life, the oceans, the seafloor, and the atmosphere. Cruises vary from local trips to expeditions as long as two and one-half years. Scripps research ships, available to scientists around the world, have steamed more than six million nautical miles in support of science and the academic community.

This is a work in progress. At this point there is some confusion with the video links and some video links that take you to the wrong video.
I will be working to correct this problem over the next couple of days. I will also be adding identifiers as to which links are text and which are videos, also the video lengths for your convenience.

Link Failure! Due to the way that Splashcast displays their RSS link folder I was under the impression that each video would have its own RSS link.
I arrainged the videos into "shows" for each of the post headings to make keeping track of them easier.
As it turns out the links are not for the individual video, but rather for the show containing the video.
This situation is limited to the linked files held on the Splashcast server. Until I have had a chance to make each linked video its own show the following work-around will get you to the rest of the links.

Work-around:
Click on any link in the category you wish. The player will start on the first link I added to the show. When you mouse over the player, thumbnails for the other videos in the show will appear at the bottom. Mouse over the thumbnails to find the one you want you want to watch and click it.

Broken Links

Over time various links here have become broken when their content was taken down by the owners. Also the SplashCast video service, which I used extensively when I created this site, dumped all of the early users who put them on the map in favor of big dollar corporate social networking. Consequently this place has become somewhat of a mess. I will from time to time post new news links etc. and videos in other formats. When time permits I will also try to restore or remove the broken links.

The Letter

SplashCast will be discontinuing its free service for publishers effective 12:00 AM June 1, 2009.

We’ve made this decision given our focus on developing our “Social TV” product and expanding our TV application network.

Three months ago, we asked you (our publishing community), whether you would be willing to pay for the service. The vast majority answered "no." Furthermore, among those willing to pay, the average amount was extremely low. We discussed this in more detail in an earlier blog post.

Additionally, advertising is not a realistic option. We’ve explored several approaches. While we love your content, advertisers aren’t willing to pay a reasonable price to sponsor it [As an aside, this is the issue that YouTube faces on a monumental scale.]

Beyond subscription fees and advertising, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about other, more creative, approaches. The unfortunate conclusion is that continuing our free service does not make business sense (we even considered a public broadcasting-like pledge drive).

We’ve listened. We’ve thought creatively. We’ve weighed the alternatives. We’ve slept on it.

In terms of alternatives, you might check out a service called Embedr. Here is a recent review on the ReadWriteWeb blog. If you know of other services, please let us know.

Thanks for being a part of the SplashCast community. This is a tough (and sad) decision for us. We hope that you can understand that, as a startup, we have to focus.
